Sandy Bay Playing Fields

Sandy Bay Playing Fields sits on the edge of Larne like a bit of breathing space the town nearly forgot about. It's a nature reserve rather than a formal park - grassland and scrub that's doing its own thing without needing manicured pathways or visitor centres.

You're here for the walking mostly. The ground is open enough that you can wander without feeling boxed in, and on a clear day there are views across the bay that make the effort worthwhile. It's the sort of place where you might spot sea birds if you're patient, or just enjoy the wind and space when Larne itself feels too busy.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit sparse - there's no play equipment or facilities that I could see, so it's really for people who want a proper walk rather than a destination in itself. Give it an hour or so, maybe longer if the weather's cooperating and you're into birdwatching.

It works well if you're staying at Down to Earth Wild Camping just up the road. That site's got excellent reviews and would pair nicely with a morning here before heading into the bigger parks around Mid and East Antrim. The reserve is free to access, though parking information wasn't clear when I checked - best to ring ahead or check with Larne tourist information.

Worth a visit if you're in the area and want something low-key. Don't come expecting manicured gardens or facilities, just honest open ground and a bit of peace.
