Sandpit Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Canterbury, Sandpit Wood is the sort of place you stumble across and think "why haven't I been here before?" The trees are thick enough that even on a busy day you'll find pockets of genuine quiet, with footpaths that wind through beech and oak without feeling over-managed or touristy.

It's best for anyone after a straightforward forest ramble rather than dramatic views or historical attractions. The walking is gentle - nothing that'll knacker you or demand proper hiking boots. You can do a solid hour here, or potter about for twenty minutes if you're just after fresh air between other bits of the day. Kids usually manage it fine, though there's nothing flashy to keep them entertained if they're the type who need constant action.

The main appeal is simply being under the canopy. Light filters through in that particular way that makes you forget about phone signal and rushing about. It's the kind of place you visit because you're staying nearby, not because you've travelled three hours specifically for it - and that's precisely what makes it worthwhile. There's no charge, which helps, and it slots nicely into a broader Kent ramble if you're based at Dog & Duck Leisure Park in the area.

Go midweek morning if you can. Weekends attract the local crowd, which is fine, but the wood's proper character shows itself when it's quieter. Autumn's excellent here - the floor's thick with leaves and the light gets golden.
