Built in the 1800s to feed the industrial heartland below, it's a proper engineering feat that's become a focal point for walkers exploring the Wolds around Brough.

You can walk the perimeter, which takes a leisurely hour or so depending on your pace and whether you stop to watch the water birds. The paths are mostly level, so it suits families who want something gentle without the scrambling required elsewhere in Yorkshire. Birdwatchers come specifically - herons, grebes, and if you're lucky, winter migrants make it worth bringing binoculars. The whole place has that slightly industrial-pastoral thing going: water, reeds, the occasional heron, and the sense that this was built for a purpose beyond just sitting around admiring views.

It's free to access and open year-round, though you'll want to check conditions in winter before heading out - the paths can get muddy. Spring and autumn are best: less crowded than summer, better light than winter.
