Saltwell Park

The lake at Saltwell Park catches you off guard - proper expansive, with woodland pressing in on three sides and enough open water to make you feel like you've stumbled somewhere properly wild. It's a Victorian estate park near Stanley, and what strikes you immediately is how well it's kept without feeling manicured to death.

You get a solid circular walk around the water - takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace - with decent paths and benches dotted about if your legs need a break. The woodland paths are shaded and damp even in summer, which is either lovely or annoying depending on whether you're after shelter or sunshine. Bird watchers do genuinely well here; the variety is noticeable. Families with younger kids will get a solid hour or so out of it, though once you've done the loop there's not masses to extend the visit.

The park is free and there's car parking on site, which matters when you're based nearby. If you're staying at Beamish Holiday Park or trying the glamping option at Beamish Glamping just down the road, Saltwell makes for a worthwhile half-morning outing. It's not dramatic - no waterfalls, no rare species on display - but it's genuine parkland that actually functions as a nature reserve rather than just looking like one. Worth the drive from Stanley if you're in the area, though I wouldn't build a whole day around it.
