Salthill Quarry Nature Trail Start

The quarry itself is long abandoned, but what's grown up around it since is genuinely worth the trip from Clitheroe. You're walking through proper Lancashire countryside here - moorland that opens out suddenly when you hit the trail itself, with views across the hills that surprise you even if you weren't expecting much.

It's a straightforward walk, nothing punishing, though it can be muddy after rain so decent boots are wise. The trail loops round the old workings, and you get a real sense of how the landscape's been shaped over centuries. The quarry face itself is dramatic enough - sheer limestone walls that catch the light differently depending on what time you arrive. Birds nest in the high ledges. Visitors who like a bit of industrial archaeology tend to love this place; it's the kind of walk where your kids might actually ask questions rather than complain.

Allow a good two hours if you're not rushing, maybe ninety minutes if you're just there for the loop. Free to access, as far as I can gather, though there's nowhere official to leave a car that I saw, so you're parking near the start and walking from there.

It works brilliantly as part of a longer stay at Cross Lane Caravan Park, which sits just 2.5 miles away. Pair it with a poke around Clitheroe itself - the town centre's got proper character - and you've got a solid half-day sorted. Calder Farm over at 4.9 miles is another solid option if you're camping with pods.
