Salters Castle (Ruins)

All that remains of Salters Castle is a crumbling stone tower rising from scrubland near Antrim - it's atmospheric in a mournful sort of way. The place has that feel of somewhere genuinely forgotten, where tourists rarely venture and locals have stopped mentioning it entirely.

The tower itself dates back to the 17th century, built during a period when the Irish landscape was carved up and fortified. What stands now are just the walls, open to the sky, covered in moss and the kind of weathering that makes medieval ruins feel properly ancient. You can walk round it easily enough, and on a clear day there are decent views across the surrounding countryside - rolling greens and distant hills. It won't take long to see - twenty minutes maximum, unless you're the type who likes to sit and sketch ruins.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, particularly if you're already exploring the broader Antrim area. It's not a major attraction, which is precisely why some people prefer it. No crowds, no gift shop, no entrance fee that I'm aware of. The setting is quiet, sometimes lonely. Not ideal for young children who need more interactive stimulus, but walkers and photographers often find it rewarding.

If you're staying at Sett on The Lough - a solid caravan park just four and a half miles away - Salters Castle makes a decent half-hour detour during a wider exploration of the area. Best visited in dry weather when the ground isn't waterlogged. Don't expect grandeur; expect authenticity instead.
