Salterns Marsh

Salt-crusted channels wind through this expansive tidal marsh between Lymington and the Solent, creating one of Hampshire's most important wildlife havens. You'll spot curlews probing the mud with their curved bills, little egrets stalking through shallow pools, and if you're lucky, the occasional spoonbill sweeping its distinctive spatula-shaped beak through the water.

Birdwatchers will get the most from Salterns Marsh, particularly during migration seasons when rare visitors drop in alongside the resident breeding pairs. The raised footpaths keep you dry while offering excellent vantage points across the wetlands. Early morning visits yield the best wildlife activity, though the light can be rather harsh for photography by midday.

Families might find it a bit specialist unless the kids are genuinely into nature - there's no playground or café to fall back on. The walking is easy enough for most ages, but wellies are essential if you venture off the main paths.

From nearby holiday parks like Lytton Lawn Touring Park or Shorefield Country Park, it's a proper short drive into Lymington town before heading out to the marsh. Worth combining with a wander around Lymington's Georgian high street and perhaps a ferry trip to the Isle of Wight. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it seriously, though you could easily spend longer with binoculars and a thermos.
