Saint-Peter-in-Chains Catholic Church, Ardrossan

The red sandstone facade of Saint-Peter-in-Chains catches you off guard as you wander through Ardrossan's quieter streets. It's a Victorian Catholic church built in the 1870s, and stepping inside feels like walking into a different era entirely - all ornate plasterwork, stained glass, and that particular smell of old stone and candle wax that churches seem to hold onto.

This isn't a showstopper like Edinburgh's grand cathedrals, but that's rather the point. It's the real thing - working parish church rather than tourist attraction - which means you'll often have the place to yourself. The interior is genuinely beautiful in an understated way: decent stained glass windows, a proper wooden ceiling, and enough detail to spend twenty minutes tracing the craftsmanship if you're into that sort of thing.

Worth a visit if you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Sandylands just up the road - it's barely two miles away and makes a decent rainy-day break from the caravan. Ten minutes is enough to have a proper look around, though history enthusiasts might linger longer exploring the Victorian stonework. Don't expect opening hours to be posted anywhere - just try the door and hope for the best, which is fairly standard for parish churches up here. No admission charge, and the locals are generally friendly enough if you bump into anyone.

Not essential if you're just passing through Ayrshire, but if you're based nearby and enjoy Victorian church architecture, it's well worth the short walk.
