Saint Oswald

The church sits on a rise overlooking Burford, one of the Cotswolds' most handsome market towns, and it's worth the climb just for that view. Saint Oswald is a proper medieval church - the sort with a tower you can spot from miles around and a graveyard full of stories if you're into that sort of thing.

Inside, there's decent medieval stonework and the usual ecclesiastical fixtures, though it won't hold your attention for more than twenty minutes unless you're a serious church crawler. The real draw is the setting and the walk up from Burford itself, which takes about ten minutes on foot through the town's steep streets. The surrounding churchyard is peaceful, genuinely quiet in a way town centres rarely are.

History buffs will get more from it than casual visitors, but anyone staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Wysdom Touring Park is barely a mile away, or Grove Farm Glamping Pods if you fancy something more unusual - would do well to pop in as part of a Burford walk rather than making it a destination in itself. Pair it with a wander round the town's antique shops and a pint at the Tolly Babcock and you've got a solid half-day sorted.

Free to enter. No set opening hours that I can find, so aim for daylight and don't expect facilities. Early morning's best if you want the place to yourself.
