Saint Mary's Church, Banbury

The church dominates Banbury's high street, a proper statement of medieval intent that you can't miss even if you tried. Built largely in the 15th century, Saint Mary's is one of those parish churches that rewards a proper look inside - the ceiling work alone is worth stopping for, all intricate wooden beams and craftsmanship that speaks to the money flowing through this market town back in the day.

Walking around the exterior gives you a sense of scale; it's substantial without being overwhelming, and the stonework has that lived-in quality of a building that's been here for half a millennium. The interior is genuinely impressive for a market town church - decent stained glass, a good layout, and enough detail to keep you occupied for twenty minutes or so.

This works best if you're already in Banbury itself, perhaps on the way to or from Oxford. It's not the sort of place you'd drive hours out of your way for, but if you're camping at one of the nearby parks like Anita's Touring Caravan Park or Fir Tree Campsite, it's an easy morning walk from the site. You can usually get in during reasonable daylight hours; it's free admission as far as church entries go, though a donation is always appreciated.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it, and it's child-friendly enough if they're at an age to appreciate old buildings. Plan on thirty minutes if you're thorough, less if you're just passing through.
