Saint Mary

St Mary in Crewkerne is one of those churches that stops you mid-walk through a market town. The building itself - all perpendicular Gothic with a proper impressive tower - dates back centuries and dominates the High Street in a way that reminds you how much the Church once shaped English towns. Inside, there's decent medieval stonework and some interesting monuments if you're into that sort of thing, though it's not going to blow your mind if you're not already keen on church architecture.

Really, this is a spot for history types having a gentle mooch round Crewkerne rather than a destination in itself. The tower's handsome from the outside, the churchyard's peaceful enough for a breather between wandering the town's other bits and pieces. Twenty minutes max will cover it properly.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Esme's Escape or Swallowfield are both within easy reach - popping into St Mary makes a sensible pause during a ramble into town. Wytch Wood Camping's equally close by. None of these are hidden away; you'll stumble past the church naturally if you're exploring Crewkerne's streets. Worth a look while you're there, but don't rearrange your holiday to visit it. The real draw is the market town itself and what's in the surrounding Somerset countryside.
