Saint Margaret's Church

The church sits on the edge of Binsey, a proper backwater village just outside Oxford where the Thames meanders through water meadows. Saint Margaret's is a tiny medieval affair - the sort of place where you half expect to bump into a monk around the corner, except it's been quietly serving its parish for about 900 years without much fuss.

What strikes you first is how absolutely unpretentious it all is. The chancel roof has a barrel vault that's genuinely lovely, and there's a 12th-century font that's seen countless local baptisms. The interior feels lived-in rather than museumified, which is refreshing. You're looking at maybe twenty minutes inside, tops, but it's the walk that makes it worthwhile - the approach through the village is genuinely pleasant, and you get proper countryside on the doorstep despite being barely three miles from Oxford city centre.

This isn't somewhere to drag reluctant teenagers, but walkers will appreciate it as a waypoint on a longer ramble along the Thames Path. Greenhill Leisure Park lies six miles away and serves as a reasonable base if you're after a park holiday with easy access to both countryside walks and Oxford itself. The village pub does decent food if you time it right.

Go if you like small medieval churches and don't mind a quiet spot. Skip it if you're after architectural grandeur or a busy visitor experience. It's honest, unpretentious, and genuinely worth the short detour from Oxford.
