The church sits alone in countryside that feels properly remote, even though Halesworth is only a few miles away. Saint Margaret at Illketshall is one of those Suffolk churches that catches you off guard - substantial, medieval, and quietly impressive without any fuss.

Inside, there's real medieval work: the roof timbers are original, and there's a sense that you're standing in the same space where people have worshipped for 700 years. The tower dominates the approach, and the churchyard has that particular peace you only get in places that have been burial grounds since the 12th century.

This is church tourism for people who actually care about architecture and history, not for quick Instagram stops. You'll need to find keys or check access beforehand - it's not always open. Allow an hour if you're interested in the details, twenty minutes if you're just passing through.

For a camping holiday in the area, it works well. Green Haven is less than three miles away, and if you're staying at Dawn Chorus (the glamping place) you could easily make this part of a morning walk before heading to Blythburgh or Southwold. Sunnyside is a bit further, but still within easy reach. The real value here is combining it with the larger churches at Blythburgh and Covehithe - you could do three in a day and actually understand the landscape that shaped them.
