Saint Leonard's Park

Saint Leonard's Park sits just outside Hawick as a proper nature reserve where you can actually see why people get excited about Scottish Borders countryside. It's not dramatic stuff - no lochs, no mountains - but it's the kind of place where you genuinely spot wildlife if you're patient and quiet. Woodland trails wind through the reserve, and depending on the season, you might catch sight of roe deer, woodpeckers, or smaller birds flitting between the trees.

Walkers will find the most value here. You're looking at anything from a gentle 30-minute stroll to a couple of hours if you take it slowly and stop to watch things. Families with young children can do a shorter loop without fuss, though there's not much to entertain them once the novelty of "spotting animals" wears off - say an hour maximum for kids under eight.

The beauty of staying at Stouslie Snugs, just a few miles away, is you can knock out Saint Leonard's as a morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's the kind of reserve that rewards early visits when wildlife is more active. Come autumn or spring for the best birdwatching. Summer's fine if you're after a woodland walk without crowds, but you'll see less fauna.

No facilities that we're aware of, so bring water if you're making a proper outing of it. Free access, as far as we can tell - it's a proper community space. Worth an hour of your time if you're in Hawick anyway, but don't rearrange your trip around it.
