Saint Leonard's Church

The churchyard slopes away sharply toward the river - you'll notice that straightaway when you arrive in Bridgnorth. St Leonard's sits on a steep bank above the Severn, and the walk down alone tells you this place has mattered for centuries.

Inside, the church is a proper mix of periods, from Norman bits right through to Victorian restoration work. The chancel has some decent medieval features if you know where to look, and there's enough architectural detail to keep history types occupied for a solid half hour. The setting is genuinely lovely - you get river views from the churchyard, and on a clear day it's the sort of spot where you understand why someone chose this particular hillside to build a church.

It's free to visit, though opening hours seem fluid depending on who's got the keys on the day. Worth ringing ahead or checking locally. The walk up from the town centre isn't steep - well, it is steep, but it's short. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a clamber in hot weather, but nothing punishing.

If you're staying at Stanmore Hall Touring Park nearby, this makes an easy afternoon detour between the park and Bridgnorth's high street. The town itself has enough shops and cafes to justify a longer visit, and the church works well as a quiet break from the main drag. Don't expect crowds - that's rather the point.
