Saint John the Evangelist

The church sits on Burford's high street like it's been there since forever - because it basically has. Saint John the Evangelist is a proper medieval parish church, all honey-coloured stone and narrow windows, the kind of place that makes you understand why the Cotswolds got so fashionable in the first place.

Inside, there's decent medieval woodwork and the usual period fixtures you'd expect from a church that's been standing since the 12th century. It's not going to blow your mind with treasures or architectural fireworks, but if you're into that particular brand of English ecclesiastical quiet, it's worth a look. The kind of place where you spend twenty minutes, read the noticeboard about the annual flower festival, and move on.

History buffs will get something out of it. Families with young kids might find it a bit dull unless they're already the type to drag them around every church within a ten-mile radius. Walkers doing the Burford loop will pass right by it anyway.

The real advantage is location. It's right in Burford itself, so you can combine it with a proper mooch around the town's high street - good cafes, decent pubs, the sort of place worth spending a morning in. If you're staying at Cotswolds Meadow Glamping or one of the other parks nearby, Saint John's is an easy add-on rather than a destination in itself. Admission's likely free, though do check before you show up.
