Saint James

The Church of Saint James dominates Castle Acre's high street like it has for the best part of a thousand years. It's a proper Norfolk flint church, all fluted stone columns and clerestory windows that flood the interior with light. Walking in, you're immediately struck by the scale of the place - the nave feels vast and airy, quite different from the cramped village exterior suggests.

Inside, there's real medieval fabric to admire. The font dates back centuries, and the brass monuments embedded in the floor tell stories of the local gentry who thought they'd last forever. The chancel has some decent Victorian restoration work that didn't ruin the place, which is more than you can say for many Norfolk churches. The rood screen is handsome without being showy.

This works best if you're into church architecture or local history. Casual visitors might spend twenty minutes here, maybe thirty if you're reading the inscriptions. It's free to wander in, and the location on the main street makes it an easy stop when you're exploring Castle Acre's other attractions - the priory ruins are just a short walk away.

If you're based at Breckland Meadows Caravan Park near Swaffham, it's roughly a half-hour drive. Worth combining with a proper walk around the village and the priory grounds. Don't expect dramatic vaulting or gilded statues, but if you appreciate solid medieval craftsmanship, it rewards a visit.
