Saint Giles

The church sits on Thame's high street with the kind of gravitas you'd expect from a building that's been there since the medieval period. Saint Giles is properly impressive - soaring perpendicular Gothic, lots of light flooding through tall windows, and the sort of stonework that makes you crane your neck without thinking about it.

Inside, there's decent medieval glass and some fine monuments if you're into that sort of thing. The chancel's well worth a proper look, and the whole space has that peaceful, slightly cool quality you only get in old stone buildings. It's not a race-through job like some parish churches - there's actual substance here.

Walkers and history buffs will get the most from it, though anyone passing through Thame might as well pop in for twenty minutes. It costs nothing, which is always a bonus. The building itself does the talking without needing much fanfare.

For a park holiday in the area, it breaks up the routine nicely if you're based at Lashlake Barn or White Mark Glamping nearby. Thame's a decent market town with proper shops and a decent pub or two, so combine the church visit with a mooch around town and a proper lunch. The Oxfordshire countryside around here is walking territory, and the church gives you a focal point that's worth the detour if you're in the parish anyway. Don't go out of your way specifically, but if you're staying locally, it's time well spent.
