Saint George's

Saint George's is a proper Victorian church right in Southport, the kind of building that makes you stop mid-stride on the high street and actually look up. It's all red brick and Gothic Revival detailing - all pointy arches and stained glass that catches the light just right when you catch it at the correct angle. The interior is what draws you in though. The craftsmanship is genuinely impressive, with ornate woodwork and that particular quiet that only old churches manage to pull off.

It's a straightforward visit - you walk in, have a poke around, and feel the weight of a century-and-a-bit of weddings, christenings, and Sunday services absorbed into the stone. History buffs will spend a decent amount of time reading plaques and admiring the architectural details. Families with restless kids might find twenty minutes is enough unless they're genuinely into churches. The staff are usually welcoming if anyone's about.

If you're staying at one of the local caravan parks - Southport Caravan and Motorhome Club is barely over a mile away, or Four Seasons Glamping just up the road at 4.3 miles - it's a natural ten-minute wander into town. Works brilliantly as a half-hour break between beachfront time and a spot of lunch. Free to enter, naturally, though a donation box sits by the door if you fancy supporting the upkeep. Check opening hours before you head in, as churches can be temperamental about visitor times.
