Saddington Reservoir

Water, sky, and not much else - that's Saddington Reservoir, and honestly it's rather brilliant if you want a proper escape without the crowds. This is a working water supply for Leicester, which means it's been kept in decent shape without the tourist infrastructure that drowns other reservoirs. The walk around the perimeter is flat and straightforward, taking about an hour depending on your pace. You get views across open water with the occasional heron, and on a clear day the light off the surface is worth the trip alone.

It's best for walkers and birdwatchers. Families with young kids might find it a bit sparse - there's no café, no play area, no reason to linger beyond the walk itself. That's not a criticism, just a fact worth knowing. Fishing is allowed in certain areas if you've got a permit sorted beforehand. The area around the southern bank is the most accessible and rewarding.

Leicester is the nearest town, about five miles south, which gives you some perspective on how rural this actually is. The surrounding Northamptonshire countryside is gentle rather than dramatic - proper walking country without the hype. If you're based at one of the caravan sites nearby (Valley View Escapes is less than a mile away), Saddington makes for a decent morning outing before heading into Leicester or exploring the quieter villages dotted around. Go early to avoid the weekend car park scramble, though to be honest, a scramble here means ten other cars.
