Sacred Heart

The Sacred Heart sits on a quiet street in Stoke-on-Trent, a Victorian-era Catholic church that punches well above its weight architecturally. Red brick and stone detailing give it proper gravitas, and stepping inside reveals the kind of ornate interior you'd expect from a place built when the pottery industry was booming and the Catholic community here had real money to spend.

It's genuinely worth an hour of your time if you're into church architecture or Victorian craftsmanship. The stained glass is excellent, the woodwork meticulous. You won't need specialist knowledge to appreciate it - the sheer care that's gone into every detail is obvious. That said, it's not a destination attraction unless you're seriously into ecclesiastical buildings. Kids might manage fifteen minutes before fidgeting sets in.

The real value is coupling it with a longer potter around Stoke itself. If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Castle Camping is only four miles away and highly rated - this makes for a natural morning or afternoon detour without eating into actual holiday time. Same goes for Sky View Caravan Park just five and a half miles south.

Best to call ahead or check locally for opening times and any services running - churches in smaller towns aren't always open to casual visitors outside worship hours. Free admission when it is open, which feels fair.
