A single stone marks one of Devon's most sobering moments. The Rwanda Memorial Stone sits quietly near Plymouth, a modest but powerful tribute to the Rwandan genocide of 1994. There's no fanfare here - just a slate slab carved with names and dates, the kind of place that stops you mid-step.

This isn't a sprawling museum or visitor attraction in the traditional sense. It's a moment of reflection, the sort of memorial that works precisely because it's understated. You'll spend ten minutes here, maybe fifteen if you sit with it properly. Families with older children might find it valuable as a teaching point about recent history; walkers tackling the wider area will appreciate its quiet location off the main drag.

The stone works best as part of a broader Dartmoor outing rather than a destination in itself. If you're based at Dartmoor Domes - the rather excellent glamping spot six miles away - this is worth a detour en route to somewhere else, or as a thoughtful break from hiking. Plymouth itself is close by, so you could combine it with the city's naval heritage or the Hoe if you're after contrasts.
