Rutland Water Nature Reserve

The reservoir sprawls across 3,100 acres of water and shoreline just outside Oakham, and it's genuinely one of the finest spots in the East Midlands for watching birds without needing binoculars to spot something interesting. You're talking ospreys, bitterns, greenshanks - proper rare stuff that gets twitchers driving from across the country. Walking the perimeter takes the best part of a day, though shorter circuits work fine if you've got limited time. Spring and autumn bring the most traffic overhead, but winter's quiet and rewarding if you don't mind the cold.

The reserve has visitor centres and hides dotted around - some are excellent, others feel a bit tired - and the walking is straightforward enough for families without being dull. Kids will get bored eventually unless they're genuinely into birds, but there's something satisfying about the sheer scale of the place. Bring binoculars. Bring a decent guidebook. Don't expect the drama of coastal reserves, but accept it on its own terms and you'll have a proper morning or afternoon.

Access appears free, though facilities and parking arrangements change, so checking ahead makes sense. If you're based at somewhere like Greendale Farm Caravan & Camping Park five miles away, Rutland Water works as a half-day break from site life. It's honest, uncrowded, and does exactly what it says on the tin. Not flashy. Not Instagram-ready. But genuinely worth the visit if you like open water and the chance of spotting something you haven't seen before.
