Ruthven Church

The ruined kirk stands alone in farmland outside Blairgowrie, a bit haunting in that way old Scottish churches often are. Stone walls, no roof, and enough atmosphere to stop you in your tracks even if you're just passing through. It's genuinely old - the sort of place where you half expect to hear bagpipes echoing across the Perthshire fields.

There's not much to do here in the conventional sense. You walk around it, read any plaques if your eyesight's up to it, take some photographs if you're that way inclined. The interior's open to the elements, so you get a proper sense of the structure - walls, windows, the shapes of things long gone. It takes maybe fifteen, twenty minutes to have a proper look. Kids might find it moderately interesting, particularly if they've read any Scottish history, but it won't hold their attention long.

Ruthven works best as a stop rather than a destination. If you're camped at Five Roads or Nethercraig - both well-rated parks very close by - it's worth a quick detour on a walk. Blairgowrie itself is only a couple of miles away, so you could combine it with a village visit. The setting's genuinely lovely, and there's something about seeing how these rural kirks sat in the landscape that makes you understand old Scottish communities better than any museum display could.
