Ruthin ROC Post

Deep underground in the hills above Ruthin sits a Cold War command centre that still feels genuinely eerie. The ROC Post - Royal Observer Corps - was built to monitor nuclear fallout and coordinate air defence during the 1960s, and it's been preserved almost exactly as staff left it when the threat finally faded.

You descend into a reinforced bunker lined with banks of monitoring equipment, plotting tables, and Bakelite telephones. The guides really know their stuff and won't let you leave without understanding what it was actually like to sit down here, waiting for a nuclear strike that thankfully never came. It's claustrophobic in the right way - the kind of place that makes you grateful for the passage of time.

Historically minded visitors will find this genuinely absorbing. Kids aged ten and up tend to get it, though younger ones might find the low ceilings oppressive. Allow ninety minutes to two hours. The site operates as a volunteer-run museum with modest admission fees.
