Rutherford’s Monument

A sandstone obelisk stands alone on a hillside near Castle Douglas, marking the burial place of John Rutherford, an 18th-century local worthy. It's not the sort of monument that'll stop you in your tracks from the road - you need to know it's there and be willing to walk up to it. The setting is what matters: moorland views across Dumfries and Galloway, and a real sense of being away from things.

The walk itself takes maybe twenty minutes from the car park, through decent countryside. It's straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might grumble about the climb.
