Russian Zawn

Dramatic limestone cliffs drop straight into the churning sea at this spectacular but rarely visited viewpoint on the Gower Peninsula. Russian Zawn gets its name from a Russian vessel that came to grief here in the 19th century, though you'd never guess its maritime history from the wild, windswept clifftop.

Walking here feels properly adventurous. The approach requires a decent trek across rough grassland from the car park near Three Cliffs Bay, and the final scramble to the edge isn't for anyone with dodgy knees. But the payoff is enormous - you get sweeping views across Oxwich Bay and the Bristol Channel that feel completely untouched by tourism.

Families with young children should give this one a miss. The cliff edge has no barriers whatsoever, and the wind can be fierce. Serious coastal walkers and photographers will love it, especially in stormy weather when the waves crash spectacularly below.

Allow at least two hours for the round trip from your base at Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park or Nicholaston Farm. The path can be muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are essential. Best visited during golden hour for dramatic lighting, though the spot works well any time of day when visibility is good. This isn't a quick tick-box stop - it rewards those willing to make the effort.
