Russian Cannon

A cast-iron Russian cannon sits on the cliffs near Cardigan, a genuine relic from the Crimean War that somehow ended up in Pembrokeshire. It's the sort of thing you stumble across on a coastal walk and think: how on earth did that get here? The story goes it was brought back by a local who served in the conflict, though the exact details are gloriously murky - which rather adds to its appeal.

It's not a major production. You're looking at a cannon, essentially, with a bit of historical weight attached. The real draw is the walk to reach it and the coastal views once you're there. History buffs will appreciate standing next to something that's actually been fired in anger, while walkers get a decent excuse to explore this stretch of the Cardigan Bay coast.

There's no visitor centre or admission charge - it's just there on public land. Twenty minutes to walk to it, another ten to have a proper look and take photos. Go on a clear day if you can; the views towards Cardigan head are worth the walk alone, cannon or no cannon.

It slots well into a Pembrokeshire coastal break. Base yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Cardigan Bay Holiday Park or Mwnt Camping are both close enough - and combine it with the broader Cardigan Bay coastal path. You could easily tack this onto a longer day's walking without it feeling like a detour.
