Russell Carroll Jackfield Park

The River Severn cuts through Jackfield with real purpose, and this nature reserve gives you a proper vantage point to watch it do its work. It's not a manicured spot - think overgrown banks, tangled vegetation, and the kind of muddy paths that mean you actually feel like you're somewhere wild rather than just wandering round a car park with benches.

The reserve sits just outside Coalbrookdale, that industrial heritage heartland where everything's built on iron and pottery history. But here, nature's had the last word. You get decent birdwatching if that's your thing - kingfishers if you're lucky and patient - plus the occasional roe deer if conditions are right. The walk itself follows the river valley, so there's a real sense of descending into something rather than just strolling round flat ground.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination for rushing round in an hour; you need time to sit, watch, and listen. Kids might find it a touch dull unless they're genuinely into spotting wildlife, but if yours are the exploring type rather than the theme-park type, they'll probably enjoy scrambling about on the rougher bits of path.

The free admission (assuming it still is) makes this an easy add-on to a wider Shropshire trip rather than a destination on its own.
