Rushy Rigg

The walk up Rushy Rigg from Haltwhistle doesn't take long, but it's steep enough to leave you breathing hard. The fell sits at 408 metres - nothing alpine by any stretch, but it offers proper views across Northumberland's rolling moorland that justify the legwork. On a clear day you can see well beyond the local valleys, which makes it popular with walkers who want something short and sharp rather than an all-day commitment.

The summit itself is bare and windswept, which is exactly what you'd expect from a Pennine peak. There's not much infrastructure up there - no café, no facilities - so come prepared with water and something to eat if you're planning to linger. The paths are well-trodden and reasonably clear, though they can be boggy after rain, which is often in these parts.

It works best for fell runners and hiking enthusiasts who appreciate the directness of it all. Families with younger kids might find it a bit much depending on their experience, though determined eight-year-olds would manage the ascent without drama. Stonehaugh Campsite is only 5.5 miles away and rated brilliantly, making it an easy base for combining this peak with other moorland walks in the area.

Go early if you want solitude. The peak draws enough traffic on weekends that you won't be alone, but the exposed nature of it means weather can turn quickly. Allow roughly two hours round trip from the carpark, though strong walkers might do it in ninety minutes.
