About Great Black Pike

The walk up Great Black Pike starts gently enough, but don't let that fool you. This Northumberland fell, rising just under 600 metres near Haltwhistle, demands respect on the steeper pitches - though the payoff from the summit absolutely justifies the huff and puff. On a clear day, you're looking across the Pennines with proper views towards Cross Fell and the wider fells. The terrain is moorland, mostly, with patches of rock underfoot that can get slippery when wet, so decent boots aren't optional.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top taking photos. It's not a technical climb, but it's no gentle stroll either - this is solid walking country. Families with older kids who've done a few hills before will manage it fine; younger ones might find the final push tedious. History buffs will appreciate the location too, sat on the edge of Hadrian's Wall territory, though the actual wall itself isn't visible from the peak.

The best approach is from the south side, and there's no charge to walk - it's open access moorland. Timing-wise, aim for clear weather because in cloud the views evaporate and the navigation becomes less forgiving. Spring through early autumn works well.

Base yourself at Hadrian's Wall Campsite (6.1 miles away) or Herding Hill Farm's glamping option if you want comfort alongside your hiking. Haltwhistle itself is a proper old railway town with decent pubs and shops for supplies before you head out.
