Cawfields Roman temporary camp

There's a Roman camp tucked into the Northumberland moorland near Haltwhistle that most visitors walk straight past without realising what they're looking at. Cawfields is the remains of a temporary marching camp - the sort of thing the Roman legions would have thrown up in a matter of hours as they moved through hostile territory. What you're actually seeing is a rectangular earthwork, ditch-and-rampart fortification that's been there for nearly two thousand years, gradually worn down by weather and sheep traffic.

It's genuinely compelling if you know what you're looking at. The scale is impressive - you can walk the perimeter and get a proper sense of Roman military precision. But here's the thing: without an interpretive board or guidebook, it just looks like a lumpy field. History types and Hadrian's Wall enthusiasts will find it fascinating. Families with young kids might get bored in ten minutes unless they're already into Romans.

The site is free and accessible year-round, though there's nowhere to park or buy a coffee. Allow 30-45 minutes if you're properly exploring it. The location is ideal if you're staying at Herding Hill Farm or Hadrian's Wall Campsite - both within walking distance - and using it as a break between other Wall sites. The moorland walks around here are cracking, so combine it with a longer ramble rather than visiting in isolation. Winter visits are bleak but atmospheric; summer feels less special somehow.
