Rushy Piece

Rushy Piece is a small patch of ancient woodland just outside Billericay, the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's proper Essex woodland - not vast, not dramatic, but real enough with decent trees and a network of paths that wind through without demanding much fitness. You're looking at maybe an hour here if you take it slowly, longer if you've got binoculars or a camera.

The forest floor gets muddy in winter, which is half the charm. There's something about walking through bare branches in December that clears the head better than any manicured country park. Children under eight might find it a bit quiet - it's not the sort of place with adventure playgrounds or ice cream vans. But if your kids actually like spotting birds or hunting for toadstools, they'll be fine.

It's free, naturally, and works well as a gentle morning walk if you're based at Barleylands Campsite up the road. Don't go expecting old-growth oaks and mystical atmosphere - this is working woodland, occasionally logged, more functional than romantic. What it does offer is a proper bit of Essex countryside without the visitor infrastructure. The nearest town of Billericay is close enough for lunch afterwards, which is just as well because there's nowhere to eat within the woods themselves.
