Rushy Flat

Rushy Flat is a modest high point on the Wiltshire chalk downs, a few miles north of Salisbury. On a clear day you get decent views across the rolling countryside - nothing dramatic, but the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people have lived here for thousands of years. The walk up takes maybe thirty minutes from the nearest road and it's straightforward enough, though the path can be muddy after rain.

This is walker territory, really. It's not a destination in itself - no facilities, no interpretive boards, just a spot where the land rises and you can see further than usual. Kids might enjoy the climb if they're the outdoor type, but don't expect them to be gripped for long once they reach the top. It's the sort of place you visit as part of a bigger loop walk, combining it with other chalky spots in the area.

Free, obviously. Allow a couple of hours if you're making a proper walk of it. Weekday mornings are quieter than weekends, and autumn brings the best light.
