Runway Visitor Park

Standing at the end of a former airfield near Macclesfield, Runway Visitor Park lets you get properly close to working aircraft - something most of us never get to do. You're literally metres from planes as they taxi and take off, which is genuinely thrilling the first time you see it happen.

The park itself is straightforward: open grassland with viewing areas right alongside the active runway at Gamston Airport. Bring binoculars and a camera with a decent zoom, because the light can be tricky and you want to catch the detail. It's free to visit, which makes it an easy decision.

This works best for plane spotters and kids obsessed with aircraft - the under-tens will be mesmerised for a good hour or two, especially if there's regular traffic. Adults who aren't fussed about aviation might find it a bit thin on entertainment, to be honest. The novelty wears off once you've watched a few landings.

No facilities to speak of, so pack snacks and water. Bring something waterproof because the exposed location means wind and sudden showers. Early mornings tend to have more activity than late afternoon.

If you're staying at Sycamore Farm Caravan Site just down the road, it's a decent half-day option alongside other Cheshire attractions. Don't expect themed entertainment or buildings to explore - this is purely about the experience of being close to active flight. Worth a visit if planes genuinely excite you, but not a reason to plan a whole trip around.
