Ruddington Green

Ruddington Green is a proper little nature reserve just outside Nottingham that catches a lot of people off guard - in a good way. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rare this close to the city. The reserve is mainly grassland and woodland, so you're looking at pleasant walking routes rather than dramatic scenery, but that's rather the point.

Walkers will find it worth an hour or two, especially if you're into spotting birds and wildflowers. Spring and early summer are when it really comes alive - you'll see butterflies and all sorts that you'd normally miss tramping around Nottingham's streets. It's free to access, which is always a bonus, and there's no pressure to stay longer than suits you.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Little Bunny Retreat is closest at just a mile and a half away - this works brilliantly as a morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's not the sort of place that'll occupy a full day, but it's ideal if you want to stretch your legs without venturing far. Kids will get bored if they're expecting adventure playgrounds and drama, but if they're the type to enjoy spotting wildlife, they'll be occupied.

Honestly, it's a solid local spot rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with a visit to Nottingham's parks and gardens, and you've got a decent outdoor itinerary sorted.
