The walk up Rubers Law from Hawick takes the best part of an hour, and it's properly steep in places - the kind of climb that has you stopping for breath and wondering if the view was really worth leaving the car behind. Spoiler: it is.

This volcanic crag rises sharply from the Borders landscape, and from the summit you get proper 360-degree views across rolling hills and farmland that stretch all the way into the distance. On a clear day you can see miles. The trig point marks the top, and there's a worn stone monument too - evidence this has been a destination for centuries.

It's the sort of walk that rewards hill-walkers and anyone after a proper cardiovascular session. Kids aged ten upwards will manage it fine if they're used to walking, though younger ones might struggle with the gradient. You're looking at two hours total if you take it steady and stop for photos.

Free to visit, naturally. No facilities up top, so bring water and snacks. The weather in the Borders can turn quickly, so check conditions before heading out.
