RSPB Nene Washes

The Nene Washes stretch out like a vast natural amphitheatre just east of March, and it's genuinely one of the best places in East Anglia to catch sight of waterfowl without fighting crowds. This RSPB reserve protects over 1,600 acres of washland - deliberately flooded meadows that serve as a crucial refuge for wading birds, ducks, and geese. Winter is peak time here, when you can expect to see wigeon, teal, and if you're lucky, the occasional rarer visitor blown in from continental Europe.

What makes it special isn't just the birds themselves, but the sheer scale of the place. The viewing hides scattered across the site mean you're never pressed up against other birdwatchers - you get proper solitude and space to scan. Bring binoculars and a decent camera, because the light across the water at sunrise genuinely stops you in your tracks. Allow a couple of hours minimum, though keen twitchers will happily spend a full day here.

It's ideal for serious birders and naturalists, though families with older kids who can sit still for more than five minutes will find it rewarding. The terrain is flat and mostly accessible, no gruelling hikes required. If you're based at nearby Knightsbridge Caravan and Marina Park, this makes an excellent morning or afternoon jaunt - far enough away to feel like a proper excursion, close enough that you're back for tea without faffing about.
