You'll find yourself walking beneath towering conifers and ancient broadleaves at Roydon Row, a proper working forest just outside Brockenhurst. It's the kind of place where the light filters green through the canopy and the ground stays soft underfoot even after rain - genuinely peaceful.

The forest isn't a manicured attraction with visitor centres and gift shops. It's more a working wood where you can wander the rides and paths, spot the occasional deer if you're quiet, and get a real sense of how Hampshire's timber was managed centuries ago. Walkers absolutely love it - the paths are well-maintained and you can spend two to three hours here without feeling rushed. Families with older kids will enjoy it too, though younger ones might find it a bit samey after an hour or so.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, which makes it excellent value. The best time is autumn when the deciduous mix turns proper golden, or spring when the forest floor erupts with bluebells and wild garlic.

It sits nicely within a Forest of New Forest break. If you're based at Lytton Lawn Touring Park or Shorefield Country Park - both solid bases with good facilities - Roydon Row is only a short drive away. Pair it with walks through Brockenhurst village itself and you've got a cracking couple of days sorted. It's not dramatically scenic, but it's genuine, quiet, and miles from the packaged experience you get at bigger attractions.
