Royal Tank Regiment

The Royal Tank Regiment Museum sits just outside Burton-on-Trent and tells the story of British armoured warfare from the First World War onwards. You're walking through decades of military engineering here - actual tanks you can get up close to, plus uniforms, weapons, and personal accounts from the soldiers who served. The collection spans from those early Mark I tanks that changed everything in 1916 right through to more recent operations. It's genuinely absorbing stuff if you've got any interest in military history, though I'll be honest: the exhibits can feel a bit spare in places, and the building itself won't win any architectural awards. That said, the tanks themselves are the real draw - seeing the sheer size and ingenuity of machines built a century ago is properly impressive. You'll need a couple of hours to do it justice without rushing. Kids with a passion for vehicles and military history will lap it up; younger children might get restless after the first thirty minutes. The museum is quiet enough that you can actually read the panels and linger without feeling crowded.
