Royal North Devon

One of England's oldest golf courses sits right on the North Devon coast near Bideford, and it's the kind of place that makes you understand why golf was invented in the first place. Royal North Devon has been here since 1864, carved into links land that looks straight out of a Scottish postcard - except you're on the south coast with warmer weather and fewer midges.

The course itself is a proper test. Eighteen holes wind through rough grasses and heather, with the sea air keeping everything honest. You'll see golfers of all standards out here, from club members to visiting players who've travelled specifically for the links experience. It's not a casual pitch-and-putt affair - this demands respect and decent technique.

Non-golfers might find it a bit limited unless you're keen on watching the game or grabbing a drink at the clubhouse. Kids will probably get bored unless they're already into golf. That said, the setting alone is worth a visit if you're staying nearby - the views across the bay are genuine and unspoilt.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Braddicks (just 1.4 miles away) or Owl Valley Glamping, the course makes a natural half-day outing. Green fees apply if you're not a member, and you'll need to book ahead - it's popular. Summer's the obvious time to visit, though autumn here is equally pleasant.
