Northam Burrows Country Park

The moment you step onto Northam Burrows, the River Torridge opens up in front of you - wide, tidal, and proper atmospheric. It's a sprawling country park just outside Bideford where the estuary flattens out into salt marsh and shingle beach, the kind of place that changes completely depending on the tide.

You've got several walks to choose from here. The main draw is getting down to the water's edge and following the coastal path - it's flat enough for anyone, though the ground can be boggy in places after rain. The views back towards Bideford are decent, and on a clear day you can see right up the estuary. Bird watchers absolutely love it here because the marshes attract everything from egrets to oystercatchers, particularly in winter. If you're staying at Braddicks Holiday Park just down the road, this is basically your front garden.

There's a car park and the basics are free, though you'll want to time your visit around the tides - low tide reveals more of the shingle and mudflats, but it can get claustrophobic at high water. Allow a couple of hours for a decent walk, maybe more if you're serious about spotting birds. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough unless they're the type who like turning over rocks and poking about in rockpools. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's exactly what a proper Devon estuary should look like - working landscape rather than postcard view. Worth building into a longer day exploring the Bideford coastline rather than a destination on its own.
