Royal Armouries: Fort Nelson

Fort Nelson sits on a ridge above Southampton with views that stretch across the Solent - it's a Victorian fort turned museum, and honestly, it's a proper day out if you're into military hardware. The Royal Armouries here focuses on artillery, so you're walking through rooms packed with cannons, mortars and enough firepower to make history textbooks come alive. Kids actually engage with this stuff rather than switching off halfway through.

The fort itself is the star. Built in the 1860s as part of the defences against a French invasion that never came, you can wander the ramparts, peek into gun emplacements and get a genuine sense of what Victorian military engineering looked like. The views alone make the walk worthwhile - on a clear day you can see across to the Isle of Wight.

Allow three to four hours minimum if you're thorough. Families with children aged eight upwards will get the most from it - younger kids find the scale interesting but the technical detail won't land. History buffs will lose hours here.

It's ideally placed for a caravan park stay in the area. Rookesbury Park sits just 3.3 miles away, making it an easy trip without dragging the whole site behind you. ScottsHaven at 4.4 miles is equally accessible. You could easily combine this with a day at Southampton itself or a walk along the water.

Go mid-week if possible. Weekends pull crowds and the narrow fort passages get bottlenecked.
