Rowtor Rocks

Rock formations just south of Matlock that look like they've been dropped onto the landscape by some bored giant. Rowtor Rocks is less a single landmark and more a collection of weathered millstone grit outcrops scattered across moorland, each one offering decent views back towards the town and across the White Peak. You'll find people clambering about on them most weekends - walkers between villages, climbers testing themselves on short routes, families letting their kids scramble up the easier bits.

The rocks themselves aren't particularly high or dramatic, but there's something satisfying about the geology of it all. The stone has weathered into these chunky, vaguely lumpy forms that feel properly ancient without being precious about it. Best visited as part of a longer walk rather than a destination trip - it's the sort of place you stumble upon while rambling between Matlock and the surrounding villages, not somewhere you'd spend a whole afternoon unless you're seriously into rock climbing.

It's free to access and you can show up whenever suits you. Allow 20 minutes to scramble around properly, longer if you're using it as a viewpoint to sit and eat a sandwich. Groups staying at any of the nearby sites like Hoe Grange Holidays or Lathkill Wild Campsite are well-positioned for it - the walk from camp is straightforward and kids will find the climbing entertaining enough. Spring and autumn are best - summer crowds can be a bit much, and winter makes the stone slippy underfoot.
