Row's Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Northwich, Row's Wood is one of those local spots that rarely makes the guidebooks but absolutely should. It's ancient woodland - the kind where the trees have been here for centuries and the paths wind through beech and oak that tower properly overhead. You're not getting dramatic vistas or a Instagram moment here; what you're getting is shade, birdsong, and the soft give of leaf litter underfoot. On a hot day it's glorious.

The woodland itself is manageable rather than vast. Most people can wander through in under an hour, though if you're the sort who likes to sit on a fallen log with a flask for twenty minutes, you could easily stretch it to two. The paths are straightforward enough that kids won't get frustrated, but it's not a manicured, sanitised experience - there are proper tree roots and the occasional muddy section, which some will love and others will curse depending on their footwear choices.

This works brilliantly as a morning stop if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Belmont Hall Camping or Cheshire Glamping at Lady Heyes are both close by. It's the sort of place that breaks up a park weekend without demanding hours of your time. Go when it's overcast rather than blazing sunshine; the wood shows itself better that way. Winter and autumn are when the woodland proper reveals itself, but spring's fine too if you don't mind the mud.
