Rowley Station Beamish Museum

The old railway station at Beamish is exactly what you'd expect from this open-air museum - a fully functioning Victorian transport hub complete with period staff, working steam trains, and the kind of authentic detail that makes you forget you're in County Durham in the 21st century. You board actual heritage trains that trundle through the museum grounds, passing reconstructed colliery villages, farms, and shops that span from the 1820s onwards. The station itself is the real deal: gas lamps, ticket offices, waiting rooms with wood stoves, the lot.

History buffs will spend a good four to five hours here easily, though families with younger children might find their attention wandering after two or three, depending on how many train rides they're willing to queue for. The trains run regularly throughout the day, which breaks up the walking nicely. Allow extra time if you want to properly explore the terraced houses or the working colliery - both are genuinely absorbing rather than just museum set-dressing.

Beamish sits roughly eight miles south of Stanley, and staying at one of the glamping sites nearby - Beamish Glamping is barely a mile away - makes proper sense. You're close enough for a full day without rushing, and the evening returns to your pod beat a standard hotel experience. Check opening hours and admission prices before you visit, as these can shift seasonally. Go mid-week if possible. Weekends draw serious crowds.
