Round Wood

Round Wood sits just outside Sheffield, a proper working forest that feels a world away from the city edge. It's the kind of place where you can actually breathe - ancient oaks and conifers packed tight, with footpaths threading through the lot. There's no visitor centre or cafe, just you, the trees, and occasionally the sound of a chainsaw reminding you this isn't a museum piece.

Walkers will get the most from it. The paths are decent enough, ranging from gentle loops to proper woodland hikes that'll take the best part of a morning. Families with young children can manage the shorter routes easily enough, though after an hour the appeal does start to wear thin unless the kids are genuinely into spotting wildlife. Bring binoculars if you're interested in birds - the forest is decent for that.

It's free to access, no barriers or gates to negotiate. Best visited after rain when everything smells right, or in autumn when the light filters through differently. Spring works too if you don't mind muddy boots.

For a park holiday, it pairs well with The Holiday Pod or Beesknees Glamping just down the road - both are within easy reach. Combine it with a walk here in the morning, then head into Sheffield for something else. Don't expect dramatic views or open vistas. This is quiet woodland rambling, straightforward and no-frills. Worth the visit if you're staying nearby and fancy a forest walk, but not worth driving from miles away.
