Round Barrow

There's nothing quite like standing on top of a Bronze Age mound and realizing you're looking out over roughly the same view a chieftain saw three thousand years ago. Round Barrow, just outside Tavistock, is exactly that - a proper archaeological site where you can actually walk up and around an ancient burial mound, no velvet ropes or visitor centre nonsense.

It's a short, easy walk from the car, and the barrow itself is substantial enough to be properly impressive without being a slog. You get real elevation and decent views across the moorland. History types will love it - there's genuine Bronze Age burial archaeology here - but it's also just a nice vantage point if you're not fussed about the dates. Kids tend to find it more interesting than you'd expect; there's something about scrambling up an actual ancient monument that beats most playgrounds.

Going alone or with the family, allow twenty minutes to half an hour. It's free, naturally, and there's no visitor infrastructure, so bring water. Best visited on a clear day when the views actually mean something. If you're staying at Woodovis Holiday Park or Sunnyside Eco Glamping nearby, it's worth a morning outing before heading somewhere else for lunch.

Tavistock itself has enough pubs and cafes to make a proper half-day of it. The site is genuinely accessible, which makes it better than many Cornish archaeological spots that require serious hiking boots and optimism.
