Round and Down

Round and Down is a contemporary gallery just outside York that punches well above its weight. The space itself is the draw - whitewashed walls, decent natural light, and the kind of rough-edged charm that tells you the owners actually care about what they're showing rather than chasing footfall.

You'll find rotating exhibitions of contemporary art and craft here. Nothing precious or gatekeeping about it. The work tends toward the accessible without being dumbed down - jewellery, textiles, sculpture, painting. The type of place where you might stumble across something that actually makes you stop and look properly rather than Instagram it and move on.

Worth allowing an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type who reads every label. It's not a half-day commitment, but that's rather the point. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Wagtail Park is closest at under three miles, or Nurseries Caravan Park if you want top ratings - it's an easy detour after wandering York's walls or before heading out to the Howardian Hills.

Families with older kids who can sit with ideas for longer than thirty seconds will get something from it. For walkers and cyclists passing through the area, it's a legitimate reason to pause. History types might find it less essential than the city proper, but that depends entirely on what's on when you visit.
