Roughfirth Glenisle Viewpoint

The walk up to Roughfirth Glenisle Viewpoint rewards you with one of those views that makes you understand why people move to Scotland. It's a proper scramble across moorland, not a stroll, so bring decent boots and allow a good hour each way from Dalbeattie.

What you get at the top is a panorama across Glenisle toward the Solway coast - on a clear day you're looking out toward England, the hills rolling away in layers of grey and green. The nature reserve around it is working land, with gorse and heather doing their thing, and if you time it right in late summer the whole hillside glows golden. There's a decent chance of spotting roe deer if you're quiet about it.

This isn't a tourist honeypot with a tearoom at the summit. It's a proper walk for walkers. Families with older kids will get something out of it; toddlers will find it punishing. History buffs won't find much beyond the landscape itself, but landscape historians could spend hours reading the geology.

Free access as far as I can tell, though it's good form to stick to paths. Spring and autumn are best - summer gets sticky and midgy, winter can be boggy after rain. The viewpoint sits handy to the holiday parks clustered near Kippford - Coastal Kippford and Castle Point are barely a mile away, so you can fold this into a wider walking holiday without any bother. Park in Dalbeattie itself and head out from there.
